Fort Bard: from history into the future

Celebrating Dante, through illustrations and cartoons

As part of the celebrations to mark the seventh centenary of Dante Alighieri’s death, the Fortress of Bard is organizing an exhibition entitled Nel segno di Dante tra illustrazione e fumetto. The exhibition, curated by Paola Persello and Bruno Testa, takes us on an extraordinary journey into the world of Dante and his Divine Comedy as seen through the eyes of famous illustrators and cartoonists.

The central core of the exhibition consists of works by Milton Glaser, Moebius and Lorenzo Mattotti who all tried their hand at illustrating Dante’s boundlessly imaginative masterpiece; but it also includes the work of other Italian and foreign artists, such as Angelo Bioletto and Silver, as well as the world of Japanese cartoons, with their explorations of religious and demonic themes. Then there are the parodies and tales of Geppo in Inferno 2000 with original drawings by Sandro Dossi, a comic-strip version of The Divine Comedy by Marcello Toninelli, Astrid’s Dante seen through the eyes of Beatrice and Emilio Guazzone’s Graphic Poem. Even more exciting is Godzilla’s journey to hell (Godzilla all’Inferno), and that of Dante, Il Divin Esule (the Divine Exile), through 14th-century Italy. Also on show are the original plates of the famous Mickey Mouse in Hell edition (L’inferno di Topolino), Disney’s first parody in Italy.  Without forgetting Silver’s Cattivik Comedy – more diabolical than “divine” – consisting of three stories entitled Un’avventura infernale (An infernal adventure), Cattivik in Purgatorio and Cattivik in Paradiso, signed by Moreno Burattini and Giorgio Sommacal.

The Omaggio a Dante (Tribute to Dante) section hosts a display of original drawings by illustrators and cartoonists from the Creative Comics stable, commissioned expressly for the exhibition.

The event will include meetings with the authors and didactic activities for schools (primary school classes IV and V, upper and lower secondary schools after booking. Info in the didactic section of the fortedibard.it. website. Bookings: prenotazioni@fortedibard.it – Tel. 0125 833818).
