From 7 December 2024 to 26 January 2025 , the military chapel of the Fort will host Li Santoun d’Arles, the majestic nativity scene curated by the Association des amis du Salon International des Santonniers of Arles. Covering an area of 80 square metres, it depicts a typical 19th-century Provençal village, featuring over 250 handcrafted statues.
The Santoun, meaning “Little Saint,” are clay figurines made using an ancient technique. Santonniers artisans first model the statues, then dry the forms multiple times using plaster moulds; finally, they paint them with special tempera paints and dress them.
The statues portray not only the Nativity scene but also traditional professions from this region in the South of France. In addition to scenes of everyday life, some popular traditions are also depicted, such as the Gypsy pilgrimage to Saintes-Marie-de-la-Mer and the Provençal Market.
This installation has previously been displayed in Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.
