Fort Bard: from history into the future

A mountain of… Signs, graphic design competition

As part of the cross-border project TransiT – Transition towards Sustainable Cultural Tourism, funded under the Interreg VI-A France-Italy Alcotra programme (2021-2027), Forte di Bard is launching Una montagna di… segni (A Mountain of… Signs), an international graphic design and illustration competition. Open to graphic designers, illustrators, artists, and designers from the Aosta Valley and beyond, the competition invites participants to explore a specific theme using diverse artistic techniques, styles, and approaches.

The initiative will unfold over two years, in a series of projects focusing on two key themes: Glaciers (2025), Mountain pastures and shepherds (2026). The contest aims to raise awareness of the environmental challenges facing mountain landscapes and glaciers through the graphic arts, illustrations, videos, and motion graphics – forms of artistic expression that are becoming increasingly popular in contemporary art but are rarely associated with mountain-related environmental issues. The competition is part of a broader project for the preservation and promotion of mountain heritage, enriching cultural and artistic programming through exhibitions, artists’ residencies, and events featuring Italian and international artists, in both Bard and the partner municipalities of Aussois and Avrieux in France.
All 45 finalist works (39 selected through the Open Call and 6 from the Master section) will be published in a printed catalogue and displayed in an exhibition at Fort Bard from July through September 2025.

The project is organised in collaboration with the Alina Art Foundation, a Dutch foundation supporting artists, and Inarttendu, a contemporary art space in Aosta.
Applications must be submitted by Friday, 4 April 2025.
