Fort Bard: from history into the future

A thematic conference on bold wolves

The European project Life 18 NAT/IT/000972 Life Wolpals Eu, funded by the European Commission for the period 2020 – 2024, aims to improve man-wolf coexistence at a pan-alpine level.

The project, coordinated by the Protected Areas of the Maritime Alps, extends to the entire Italian, French, Austrian and Slovenian Alps and to the two ecological corridors, the Apennine and Dinaric corridors. It makes use of the connection of populations and the active participation of the Valle d’Aosta Autonomous Region, together with another 19 Italian, French, Austrian and Slovenian partners.

The project aims to obtain important results in the field of protection of natural resources, but it also has significant economic implications at a local level. Financial resources have been allocated to support actions for breeders, the purchasing of preventive systems, technical training, monitoring of wolf populations, dissemination and information.

The project has, among its other objectives, the creation of intervention teams on the field and effective preventive systems, the definition of predator management guidelines at alpine level and the implementation of best practices to make the presence of wolves compatible. with man.

As part of the project, the Valle d’Aosta Autonomous Region is organizing a thematic conference on bold wolves on 29 April 2022, an increasingly frequent problem in our valleys.

The conference will be held at the Fort Bard both in person and in live streaming. The program is divided into two parts: in the morning international experts will speak about concrete cases and propose possible solutions to bold wolves. In the afternoon, on the other hand, a round table is scheduled, moderated by an expert from the Institute of Applied Ecology in Rome, during which there will be a discussion among the various stakeholders.
