Fort Bard: from history into the future

Napoleonica: the eighth edition of a grand historical reenactment

The eighth edition of Napoleonica, the major historical reenactment of Napoleon Bonaparte’s passage with his troops in May 1800 at the foot of Forte di Bard, is fast approaching. The event is scheduled from May 31 to June 2, 2025. At that time, the French Armée de Réserve, descending from the Great St. Bernard Pass, invaded the Aosta Valley, laying siege to the Forte. After two weeks, it capitulated, but with military honors. To relive that episode, over 300 reenactors from across Europe are expected. These three days packed with initiatives will offer an engaging and immersive experience. Men and women in period costumes, cannons, horses—everything will transport you back to the early 19th century.

Field Battle, Evening Siege, and Fireworks
Among the most anticipated moments is the field battle in the countryside of Hône, at the foot of the Forte, which will kick off the events on Saturday, May 31, at 4:00 PM. This will be followed by a night siege of the fortress starting at 9:00 PM. In the village, the historical episode will be reenacted with skirmishes and cannon fire between the French and Austro-Piedmontese forces. On the fortress, a light show followed by fireworks will come to life, visible from Forte di Bard. To watch the fireworks, you’ll need to purchase a special admission ticket for 8 euros to reach the top of the Forte and position yourself along the winding southern pedestrian path.

Taking of the Forte, Literary Aperitif, and Historical Dinner
On Sunday, June 1, alongside the historical market selling Napoleonic artifacts, a grand parade of troops will take place from the encampments to the top of the Forte, followed by various activities and entertainment. In the afternoon, at 2:30 PM, from Bard’s village square, the final battle for the taking of the Forte by the French will begin. From 7:00 PM, in Piazza di Gola, a literary aperitif will be held, featuring the presentation of the volumes: “Racconti” by Jacques Martinet and “Napoleone Bonaparte. La Leggenda (Assedio al Forte)” by Massimo De Muro. This will be followed by a historical dinner and the Gran Bal de la Victoire in Piazza d’Armi.
