Fort Bard: from history into the future

C’era una svolta. How we have changed and how Italy has changed through 75 years of Ansa images

There’s the story of an entire nation, with all its virtues, faults and contradictions, in the images taken by Ansa, Italy’s leading news agency, in its 75 years of activity. The 2020 edition of the Photoansa book, brought out to celebrate this important anniversary, has been turned into an exhibition illustrating through a succession of events the way in which Italy has changed, and the vicissitudes that have led it to become one of the world’s richest and most developed countries.

Out of the millions of images in Ansa’s vast archive, a selection was made of those that best illustrate the changes that have taken place in the country’s everyday life: from politics to religion, from work to social norms. Not to mention travel and holidays, entertainment and television, the youth of yesterday and today, right up to the phenomena that have revolutionised our lives, such as the advent of the mobile phone and the boom of selfies – a new way of recounting ourselves and the world around us. Thirteen sections in all, alongside one dedicated to the pandemic that has turned life upside down all over the world, bringing pain and suffering that has forced us all to rethink the way we live and plan our future.
