There is a place where time, space, and culture have decided to align with each other: right here at Fort Bard, where the creativity of Gian Paolo Barbieri has become manifest through a different expression, capable of encompassing all its facets. Fort Bard has dedicated a major retrospective exhibition to the master who marked the history of contemporary fashion and costume photography. Entitled Gian Paolo Barbieri Oltre, this event was produced in collaboration with the Gian Paolo Barbieri Foundation of Milan, curated by Emmanuele Randazzo, Catia Zucchetti and Giulia Manca, and will be held from 28 October 2023 to 3 March 2024 in the Cantine rooms.
Born at a time when Italian fashion was in its infancy, Gian Paolo Barbieri was one of the leading figures who contributed to the definition of Italian prêt-à-porter and fashion photography.
First in fashion, then in ethnic and erotic photography, the way he portrayed the body opened a window to investigating and observing the soul. He developed as an artist through fashion photography, as he scrutinised, pervaded and made the language of his shots universal.
Gian Paolo Barbieri Oltre is a journey through the photographer’s life, a well-rounded itinerary that shows a different face from the one we already know. It highlights details, and the innermost imagery that goes beyond the image, beyond fashion, and beyond nature. It goes beyond everything. Visitors can admire 112 photographs, including 88 previously unpublished ones ranging from the 1960s to the 2000s.
