Fort Bard: from history into the future

PhotoAnsa 2021

The exhibition presents a selection of images from the 2021 edition of the PHOTOANSA photography book, which brings together the most significant photographs of the past year, taken by the photographers of the Ansa agency and related to major current events in Italy and around the world.

Twelve sections, each dedicated to a specific theme: from news to politics, from sport to lifestyle. 2021 was the year of major international events coming round again, with the rain of missiles on Gaza and Israel and the victory of the Taliban. One section is dedicated to the pandemic, but told from a different perspective than in 2020: two years after the start of the COVID-19 epidemic, the photos of patients on intensive care wards have been replaced by queues of citizens waiting to receive the vaccine, by the many reopening of places of culture, work, and tourism, by young people showing their Green passes, and, in contrast, by COVID-denier protests.

Between a section dedicated to the heatwave that characterised early summer and one dedicated to the Perseverance rover landing on Mars, the stars of the book are the victories in sport and music that tell of an Italy winning thanks to its own talents: the triumphs of Italian athletes at the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, claiming the title at European football championships, the European volleyball victory, and Maneskin’s success at the Eurovision Song Contest. The images of victorious young people, of frenzied crowds in the squares of Italy, are tarnished by another sad record: the escalation of violence against women.
