Fort Bard: from history into the future

The Misfits by Magnum Photographers

The Misfits by Magnum Photographers is the title of the exhibition to be held from 17 June to 17 September 2023 at Fort Bard. It highlights the behind-the-scenes aspects of the legendary film The Misfits (1961), directed by John Huston and starring Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable and Montgomery Clift.
The exhibition is curated by Fort Bard and Magnum Photos Agency. The film’s exceptional cast was chosen to be monumental because this was the first time a script by Arthur Miller, then husband of the famous diva, was made into a movie. Precisely because of its exceptional cast, featuring Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable together on screen for the first and last time, the Magnum Photos agency became interested in the project. As part of the film’s promotional strategy, they had exclusive access to the production.

The Magnum Photos Agency sent nine of its most talented photographers to the set to make a historical documentary. These nine people are world renowned icons of 20th century photography: Eve Arnold, Cornell Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Bruce Davidson, Elliott Erwitt, Ernst Haas, Erich Hartmann, Inge Morath and Dennis Stock. Each of them immortalised the actors while they were on the set with the lighting and the landscape and captured priceless images of moments during filming and the atmosphere of the set for us to remember forever.
